Mary E. Ostrander

OSTRANDER, Mary E. (Hooth) – of Davison, age 90, died March 9, 2012. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison; Dr. Philip C. Olson officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brian’s House Hospice or a charity of choice.

Mary was born September 21, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan to Karl and Florence (Sheffers) Hooth. She grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1939. Mary was a graduate of Parsons Business College and mastered the Palmer method of penmanship. She met her husband, Walter Ostrander through a mutual friend and his participation in the Flint softball leagues. Mary and Walter were married in South Bend, Indiana in April 1949, and lived in the greater Flint area all their lives. She was the first secretary at Genesee Junior High School, secretary for the Clio Board of Education, and was a personal secretary to tool & die makers, architects and custom homebuilders. Her final employer was Carl W. Bonbright, Chairman of the Board of Genesee Bank. Independent and innovative, she opened her own office support firm, Executive Assistance, in 1983 in partnership with her daughter Rebecca Pettengill, and later, granddaughter Jennifer (McDermott) Brooks. Mary ran the business until 1993 when she suffered a brain aneurysm and had to quit working. She lived the rest of her life in Davison with support from Walter. Mary was active in the Ad-A-Lite Chapter of ABWA, serving on the board of directors and as president, was a member of the Mid-Michigan Council of the ABWA, as a business owner, a member of many professional organizations. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church serving as a ruling elder, representative to the Greater Flint Council of Churches and on many church committees and task forces. She and Walter were members of the Davison Country Club. Mary did not have hobbies, but she took pride in her work and was dedicated to her volunteer work, both missed later in life.

A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mary is survived by husband Walter; daughter Rebecca (Ostrander) Pettengill (David); grandchildren, Jennifer (McDermott) Brooks, (David) and John Karl McDermott (Cristina); great grandchildren Charlie, Colin and Spencer Brooks; and sister Barbara Hooth Wilson (Donald). Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Florence Hooth and her beloved son, John David McDermott.
